So, what are tyres afraid of? Tyres are made of rubber, so there are three things they are afraid of: direct sunlight, high temperature and water (humidity). So, to avoid having to throw away tyres whose tread is still in perfectly decent condition, store them in a dark, dry room where the air temperature does not rise above 20-25 °C.
It is also very important that the room has no sharp swings in temperature, which lead to condensation forming, and that it does not have a lot of dust and dirt, which is also bad for a tyre’s longevity.
If a tyre dries out (direct sunlight, or a temperature above 25 °C), micro-cracks appear on it, which substantially weaken its overall strength, and this can lead (and often does lead) to the tyre bursting while driving. The most unpleasant part is that these cracks are far from always visible to the eye, so you may not even know that your wheels are no longer as reliable as when they were new.
